The article is devoted to the study of the relationship between the electrical characteristics and the microstructure of the varistor. The C-V characteristics of varistors from 10 manufacturers represented in Russian Federation were experimentally determined. To compare the parameters of the samples, the dependences "electric field-conductivity" (E-σ) were built out, the coefficients of nonlinearity and were determined. The microstructure of metal oxide varistors and their chemical composition were studied. As a result of statistical processing of the data, it was concluded that the ZnO grain size significantly affects the field strength at the beginning of the conduction band. The results obtained are intended for the selection of a varistor according to the ability to dissipate the power of an impulse action.
